Twenty five years ago, Consol opened its first tanning centre: just three sun beds in an Copenhagen shop.

Today, it is the leading tanning salon chain in Europe, with approximately 350 outlets in Denmark,  the Faro Islands, the Czech Republic, Germany and throughout the UK.

As the forerunner of fully-automated, self-service tanning centres in Denmark, where partly-manned shops form over 80% of the tanning market, the Danish concept was brought to the UK in 1996.

Consol Suncenter operates 46 studio's mainly in South West England, Wales and the London area.  

The total number of coin-operated, partially supervised studios in the UK is estimated at 120 of which Consol operates the vast majority. The total number of sunbed studios in the UK is app. 8,000.

Consol Suncenter is the only company in the UK to fully comply with an EU declaration from July 2007 which regulates the level of sunbed emissions to minimize any risk of burning. It is lobbying the Government to require the UK sunbeds industry to meet this standard irrespective of age of sunbeds and regardsless of how the salons are operated.

A member of the US-based, International Smart Tan network and the Indoor Tanning Association, Consol is committed to responsible indoor tanning and sunburn prevention.
